Biography

Dr. Mary Smith is a board-certified nurse practitioner with 25 years of experience in nursing with 21 years of experience as a family nurse practitioner. She has additional certifications as an orthopedic nurse practitioner and in perioperative nursing with first-hand experience in healthcare innovation and policy related to rural healthcare access, quality improvement, and patient safety on both state and federal levels. In addition to this experience, she has also developed various care coordination models for the rural elderly and disabled homebound populations. She is a Distinguished Public Policy Fellow in the National Academies of Practice and a National Rural Health Association Policy Fellow, while also serving as one of the 12 clinicians in the first ever cohort of Clinician Champions for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Serves (CMS) where she served to support and promote the Quality Payment Program and the development of outpatient quality measures. She has served as co-chair of the National Academies of Practice Office of the National Coordinator stakeholder group that focused on policy related to health information technology and reducing clinician burden in the clinical practice setting. In addition to having 8 years of academic teaching and healthcare administrative experience, she has also participated in Meaningful Use and quality reporting from the standpoint of rural health and providing remote care to patients in rural areas via telehealth.
