Biography

Dr. Kowal is currently a staff nurse in the surgical intensive care unit of St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center in Syracuse, New York, and has been since 1997. Mr. Kowal holds certifications in adult critical care (CCRN), cardiac medicine (CMC) and cardiac surgery (CSC). He is a member of the American Nurses Association, the New York State Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau International, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, the Central New York Nursing Collaborative to Advance Research and Evidence-Based Practice, the American Association of Men in Nursing, the American Organization of Nurse Executives, and the Foundation of New York State Nurses, for which he is serving a three-year term as a research fellow. Dr. Kowal is the recipient one of three 2009 Association of Critical-Care Nurses Phillips Medical Systems research grants. He is a frequent speaker on nursing practice and care improvement, and contributes to health care journals and magazines.
