Biography

Dr. Hughes is a Certified Nurse Educator with over 30 years of teaching experience. Her areas of expertise include medical/surgical, critical care, nursing simulation, and leadership. Sandra Hughes holds a PhD in Adult Education with specialization in teaching, curriculum development, and distance education. She has developed several online courses. Prior to her academic career, she held a variety of nursing practice positions including staff nurse, nurse educator, nurse manager, and Dean of Health Careers and Public Service. Research projects include, development of an observation unit, a co-investigator curriculum for U.S. Medic to LPN, an 8-week nursing course for at risk students to increase retention and a nursing educational strategies project. Dr. Hughes has presented these research projects at local and national conferences. Dr. Hughes philosophy of nursing education is to create a learning environment that allows for students to flourish and that builds a respectful relationship between the learner and the educator.
